How Do I Know If I Should Get Braces?

The best way to determine whether you or your child should get braces is to consult with an experienced orthodontist. An orthodontist can perform an assessment of your teeth and jaws to help you understand any issues and how braces may help to remedy your concerns.

Common problems that can be addressed by braces:

  • Gaps between your teeth
  • Overcrowding
  • Crooked teeth
  • Malocclusion (misalignment of the teeth)
  • Bite issues
  • Oral health problems

There are several types of braces available for young and old. People are no longer limited to one kind of braces. To determine which would best suit your needs and lifestyle, you need to consult with an orthodontist.

What Are the Types of Braces?

There are two main types of braces available: metal and ceramic (clear) braces. Both types of braces can help you achieve the smile that you want, but they each have different positives and negatives.

Types of braces offered at NobleCare Orthodontics:

  • Metal Braces - Metal braces are the traditional kind of braces. They are made of stainless steel and are bonded to the teeth. A thin wire is placed over the metal bracket and held in place by small elastic bands known as ligatures. You generally get to choose the color of the elastic band that you want. Metal braces are strong and durable but the most noticeable of the two types.

  • Ceramic or Clear Braces - The second type of braces are ceramic or clear braces. These braces are less obvious than the metal version since they are made from ceramic that is the same color as your teeth. They work the same way using a bracket that is held in place by a thin wire and ligatures. The ceramic is less durable than the metal and, therefore, more prone to breaking.

At your assessment, an orthodontist will discuss your options and the pros and cons of each one. You can then use the information to make an informed decision about which type of braces would be best for you or your family member.

Am I Too Old for Braces?

It is not unusual for people to wonder whether they are too old for braces. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, 25% of orthodontic patients are adults. This means that one in four patients at an orthodontist's office are over the age of 18. The fact of the matter is that it is never too late to consider orthodontic treatment that will help build your confidence with a more aligned smile.
